Based on a popular series of articles published in Homeschooling Horizons Magazine, Modern History Through Canadian Eyes is a guide to teaching Canadian History using various resources including literature, videos, maps, and textbooks.  Over a hundred resources have been sorted into chronological units, making teaching Canadian History through literature a breeze!  It is designed to be used with children of all ages, from kindergarten to high school, incorporating world events chronologically into the study.

The introduction includes reviews of a number of resources that are used throughout the guide, to help the parent/teacher choose the resources that are best for her family.  These resources vary in the ages they are geared to, from primary to high school, allowing students of all ages to be taught simultaneously.  Included at the end of the book are a list of suggested resources for studying Canadian Government, and a list of suggested resources for studying Canadian Geography

Each unit contains:

v      a brief commentary about the time period to be studied, making the history come alive;

v      a list of important people and events from that time period; both Canadian and from around the world;

v      a break down of main resources that cover more than one time period, (such as the Story of Canada) by chapter and page so that each unit lays out exactly what pages in each book should be read;

v      a list of supplementary reading, guiding the student through historical novels, supplementary books, videos, and atlases;

v      a list of project and field trip ideas and questions related to the Canadian History studied in the unit;

v      a list of project ideas and questions related to the world events of the time, and how they relate to Canadian History; and

v      most units contain sketches of people or events studied to encourage students to try this type of project.

The Second Edition includes more resources, plus crossword puzzles for review and a planning guide to help make planning your course of study even easier!

“A highly recommended study guide covering Canadian history from the beginning to the present day, Modern History through Canadian Eyes goes beyond the common text book - it provides the home educating family with the guidance necessary to give their child a well-rounded study of Canadian history, correlating its events to those happening around the world in each major time period.  Filled with easily obtained resource suggestions suitable for the multiple ages of the homeschooling family, the author provides ideas and extension activities field tested on “real” homeschooled children.  The original artwork included with each study chapter is not solely for decoration, rather is a Charlotte Mason-like inspiration to the family to incorporate art and drawing in their history journal.  A Five-Star Recommendation!"

-          Angie Blackman, editor-in-chief, Homeschooling Horizons Magazine
